Overview: The Manager of First-Generation Student Success will provide vision, leadership, and strategic direction for the College&rsquo;s First-Gen@Babson program. A primary responsibility will be to coordinate efforts across the College and develop a comprehensive strategy to support all first-generation students. In addition, the Director will champion the positioning of &ldquo;first-generation&rdquo; as a distinct identity and develop community among students, staff, and faculty who identify as first-generation.<br /><br />Through its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, Babson College embraces the myriad intersectional identities of its community members. The College has invested significant resources to promote access, persistence, and retention, with a particular focus on supporting first-generation students. As a population, students who self-identify as first-generation in their family to attend college has grown from 9% to 20% of undergraduate student enrollment since 2019. Dedicated services include financial aid, a bridge program, three designated advisors of record in the Department of Student Advising &amp; Success who provide academic and personal advising for all undergraduate students from matriculation through graduation, specialized programming, career counseling, a dedicated living-learning community, mentoring, and fellowship.
Responsibilities: <p><strong><em>Programmatic and Individual Student Support:<br /><br /></em></strong></p> <ul> <li>Oversee the development of a comprehensive strategy to support all first-generation students; develop a community for those within the College who identify as first-generation.</li> <li>Organize events to connect and celebrate members of the first-generation community such as a first-generation welcome dinner at the beginning of each academic year and the First-Generation Graduation Celebration Luncheon.</li> <li>Contribute to new student onboarding efforts with a focus on first-generation students.</li> <li>Grow the first-generation mentoring program to include both upper-level students and faculty/staff.</li> <li>Serve as the primary Student Life Advisor to the Semillas Society (student organization) and the First Gen Special Interest Housing Community.</li> <li>Serve as a case manager and conduit for referrals and support for students experiencing academic and personal concerns (e.g., college transition challenges, mental and physical health, substance abuse, eating issues, family/relationship concerns, harassment) and ensure a &ldquo;warm handoff&rdquo; to appropriate resources. May serve as a member of the Campus Assessment, Response, &amp; Evaluation (CARE) Team.</li> <li>In partnership with appropriate stakeholders across campus, develop programs and workshops that best meet students&rsquo; needs as they relate to student success.</li> <li>In partnership with Student Engagement, develop and implement programming and events specific to the families of the First-Generation student community.</li> <li>Partner with the Experiential Learning &amp; Academic Excellence Team on the planning and development of the Bridge Program.</li> <li>Coordinate professional development opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to enhance their awareness of the needs of First-Generation students and their families with the goal of removing unnecessary barriers and improving programming and services to contribute to First-Generation student success.</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong><em>Operational</em></strong>:<br /><br /></p> <ul> <li>Convene a First-Generation Steering Committee comprised of students, staff, and faculty to develop a comprehensive strategy for the College and provide guidance and support for programmatic initiatives and direction.</li> <li>Manage operating budget and prepare budgets for upcoming fiscal years.</li> <li>Develop metrics of success, monitor and track progress, and prepare regular reports and dashboards for leadership to demonstrate measurable gains in student retention, graduation, sense of belonging, and overall success for First-Generation students.</li> <li>Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a team of Babson student interns to assist with programmatic responsibilities, signature events, and serving as a resource to peers.</li> <li>Serve as a member of the Student Success Leadership Team, partnering with the Directors of Accessibility Services, Counseling &amp; Psychological Services, Health Services, Religious &amp; Spiritual Life, Student Advising &amp; Success, and Wellness &amp; Prevention Services on a wide range of projects, initiatives, and strategic planning within the Student Success Portfolio</li> <li>Partner with Advancement and College leadership to raise additional capital in support of a business model that includes a combination of institutional, For HR Use Only: Individual Contributor-ADM-EEO 2-STUendowment, foundation, and gift funds to sustain a Center for First-Generation Student Success. Participate in College-wide committees as designated by supervisor.</li> <li>Support the efforts of other offices by participating in alumni, admission, undergraduate program, wellness and prevention, student success, and career development events.</li> <li>Assume additional responsibilities as required.</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>YOUR TEAM WILL INCLUDE</strong></p> <ul> <li>May supervise graduate assistants, interns, and/or student employees.</li> </ul>
Requirements: <p><strong>WHAT EDUCATION AND SKILLS YOU WILL NEED<br /><br /></strong></p> <ul> <li>Master&rsquo;s Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field.</li> <li>A minimum of 6-8 years of experience working with college students.</li> <li>Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to, and empathy with, the developmental needs of today&rsquo;s college students.</li> <li>Ability to work with ethnically, culturally, and socially diverse students, staff, and faculty.</li> <li>Must have strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.</li> <li>Must have strong organizational skills and attention to detail.</li> <li>Must have strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), Workday and Salesforce or other student information systems.</li> <li>Ability to understand and make use of relevant student information and data to provide individualized advising services, support student success interventions, and implement targeted programming.</li> <li>Must be flexible and willing to assume new tasks and special projects.</li> <li>Must be capable of effectively managing a student crisis and following up with all appropriate parties in support of their academic, personal, and professional success.</li> <li>Ability to envision and propose new methods to perform tasks that support Entrepreneurial Thought &amp; Action; to take thoughtful risks; and accept new and ongoing initiatives, objectives, and solutions to gain sought-after results.</li> <li>Ability to anticipate and embrace change; demonstrate willingness to achieve, acquire, and utilize new skills and challenging tasks; and is flexible in changing conditions.</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>​HOW AND WHERE YOU WILL WORK<br /><br /></strong></p> <ul> <li>Requires frequent evening and weekend work throughout the academic year.</li> <li>This is a two-year, full-time, benefits-eligible, grant-funded position with a strong possibility of renewal and converting to a permanent, institutionally funded role.</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>ADDITIONAL SKILLS YOU MAY HAVE<br /><br /></strong></p> <ul> <li>Supervisory experience, particularly with college students, a plus.</li> </ul>
