Overview: <p>The BCBSM Pharmacy Services Clinical Intern - Emerging Therapies &amp; Clinical Liaison will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects relating to the practice of managed care pharmacy. Projects will include working on day-to-day pharmacy benefit administration issues, clinical pharmacy operations, pharmacy communication, utilization management, and regulatory issues. Projects and assignments will allow the intern to apply the skills and knowledge acquired from pharmacy school to a managed care pharmacy practice environment, while enhancing their therapeutic knowledge, communication, and analytical skills.</p> <p><strong>Objectives:<br /></strong>Upon completion of the internship, the intern will have gained experience relating to understanding managed care pharmacy and pharmacy benefit administration.</p>
Responsibilities: <br /> <ul> <li>Assess the pipeline of drugs seeking FDA approval and support BCBSM&rsquo;s Emerging Therapies Workgroup</li> <li>Evaluate data and published literature in relation to measuring health outcomes</li> <li>Describe the BCBSM formulary process and the value of the BCBSM utilization management tools and how they are maintained from both a clinical and operational perspective</li> <li>Participate in development of utilization management criteria</li> <li>Apply sound research methodology</li> <li>Develop educational and marketing materials geared towards prescribers, patients and social media on pharmacy hot topics</li> <li>Describe how prescription claims are processed and how BCBSM Pharmacy Services work with its claims processor to ensure correct claim processing</li> <li>Participate in the medication coverage review process, including the clinical review and rendering a coverage determination for medication requests (step-therapy, prior authorization, quantity limits override)</li> </ul> <p><strong>Job Assignments and Responsibilities</strong>:</p> <ul> <li>Analyze literature, guidelines and claims data for&nbsp;the pipeline of drugs seeking FDA approval</li> <li>Assist in developing clinical rationale for medication use policies and/or utilization management tools for a particular drug or class of drugs</li> <li>Prepare clinical criteria documents for presentation at the P&amp;T committee meetings</li> <li>Serve as a clinical liaison and develop educational and marketing materials geared towards prescribers, patients and social media on pharmacy hot topics</li> <li>Review, create or analyze drug lists to help maintain the formulary and utilization management tools</li> <li>Analyze pharmacy claims to identify processing issues or patterns of utilization</li> <li>Present on clinical pharmacy topics for the pharmacy team, including a journal club presentation</li> <li>Research drug information questions</li> <li>Attend meetings necessary for completion of projects and assignments</li> <li>Update department training resources</li> <li>Review and edit formulary-related documents that are published for members and Providers</li> <li>Update information posted to BCBSM Pharmacy Services websites</li> </ul>
Requirements: <p><strong>Desired skills and competencies</strong>:&nbsp;The ideal candidate&rsquo;s qualifications will include the following:</p> <ul> <li>Strong pharmacy &amp; therapeutics knowledge</li> <li>Effective verbal and written communication skills</li> <li>Strong analytical skills and interest in working with large datasets</li> <li>Strong ability to work with Microsoft Excel</li> <li>Ability to handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously</li> <li>Interest in practicing pharmacy in a managed care environment</li> </ul> <p><strong>Required&nbsp;Work Experience</strong>:&nbsp;Previous work experience in a pharmacy practice setting is preferred.</p> <p><strong>Required Major(s)</strong>:&nbsp;Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)</p> <p><strong>Required&nbsp;and Minimum Candidate Standing</strong>: Current pharmacy students completing at least two years of a Pharm D program</p> <p><strong>Desired GPA</strong>: 3.0 or above</p>
