Overview: <p>Overview &amp; Objectives</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Position Overview:</p> BCBSM Pharmacy offers a summer internship program each summer for pharmacy students. The intern will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects relating to the practice of managed care pharmacy. Projects will include working on clinical quality measures which focus on chronic disease management such as asthma, COPD, pain management and statin therapy as well as appropriate antibiotic use. The intern will also help support the enterprise Opioid Task Force and work on a multi-disciplinary team to address the opioid epidemic. The intern will interact with various pharmacy teams such as the Medical &amp; Specialty team and the Operational team as well as departments outside of pharmacy. The projects assigned will allow the intern to apply the skills and knowledge acquired from pharmacy school to a managed care pharmacy practice environment, while enhancing their therapeutic knowledge, communication, and analytical skills.
Responsibilities: <p>Objectives and Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Upon completion of the internship, the intern will have gained a solid background relating to understanding managed care pharmacy and pharmacy benefit administration.&nbsp; Specific objectives include the following:</li> <li>Conduct retrospective and/or prospective drug utilization reviews to determine appropriate medication use</li> <li>Evaluate data and published literature in relation to measuring health outcomes</li> <li>Apply sounds research methodology</li> <li>Develop educational and marketing materials geared towards prescribers, patients and social media on opioid use and various health conditions</li> <li>Describe the formulary process and the value of utilization management tools and how they are maintained from both a clinical and operational perspectives</li> <li>Describe how prescription claims are processed and how Pharmacy Services works with its claims processor to ensure correct claim processing.</li> <li>Outline the relationships between BCBSM and its clients, contracted provider groups, contracted primary care physicians and its members.</li> <li>Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills</li> <li>Assist in developing clinical rationale for medication use policies and/or utilization management tools for a particular drug or class of drugs</li> <li>Investigate and research clinical questions to determine appropriate health management</li> <li>Analyze pharmacy claims to identify processing issues or patterns of utilization</li> </ul>
Requirements: <p>Required &amp; Preferred Skills:</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li>Desired skills and competencies: The ideal candidate&rsquo;s qualifications will include the following:</li> <li>Strong pharmacy &amp; therapeutics knowledge</li> <li>Effective verbal and written communication skills</li> <li>Strong analytical skills and interest in working with large datasets</li> <li>Strong ability to work with Microsoft Excel</li> <li>Ability to handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously</li> <li>Interest in practicing pharmacy in a managed care environment</li> <li>Required Work Experience: Previous work experience in a pharmacy practice setting is preferred.</li> <li>Required Major(s): Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)</li> <li>&nbsp;Required and Minimum Candidate Standing: Current pharmacy students completing at least two years of a Pharm D program. the candidate must be able to complete the 12-week internship (40 hrs/week) starting mid-May.</li> <li>&nbsp;Desired GPA: 3.0 or above</li> </ul>
