Our mission is to engage our audience with stories they care about.</p> <p><strong>The opportunity</strong></p> <p>At CBC Digital Operations, we are exploring voice-activated interactions as a new way to connect our audience with the content they want to hear. &nbsp;This is a 12 month contract opportunity as the first Full Stack Developer working on our Conversational Interface Platform. This is one of our most innovative endeavours - one that could truly redefine how Canadians interact with all of CBC not just Audio.</p> <p>From Amazon&rsquo;s Alexa to Google Home. From lesser known players to the Apple&rsquo;s Siri-hosting Home Pod. The future is in conversational interfaces and the Internet of Things. As the original Radio broadcaster for Canada, we are getting ready to step into this brand new space and lead the way Canadians engage with the CBC.</p> <p>Our new Full Stack Developer will be responsible for producing the underlying framework and main digital property that will make up CBC&rsquo;s Conversation Interface (CI). Strong core Java and HTML/CSS/JS skills are essential for this role, as is the passion for research, experimentation, trial and error.</p> <p>This is an opportunity for a developer who is confident in their capabilities, eager to innovate and open to learning. Responsibilities: <p><strong>How you will make a difference on a daily basis:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Develop our new Conversational Interface platform to leverage new voice-activation technologies and increase our audience&rsquo;s experiences.</li> <li>Research and benchmark CI technology, evaluate leaders in the industry.</li> <li>Create prototypes, build and test features.</li> <li>Operate closely with the product team to build infrastructure.</li> <li>Implement audio programming practices and standards.</li> <li>Ensure the quality of architecture and design of systems.</li> </ul>
Requirements: <p><strong>What you bring:</strong></p> <ul> <li>The education. A Computer Science, Engineering degree or equivalent is preferred, but we know not everyone gains their programming skills this way.</li> <li>The passion. You have a passion for information and technology and you are enthusiastic about the opportunity to link the two pieces together.</li> <li>The desire to learn. You have the ability to quickly learn new technologies and respond to change by learning and adapting.</li> <li>The communication skills. You know how to listen and relay empathy and understanding for diverse perspectives.</li> <li>The confidence and the humility. Your powers of observation help you understand your audience and communicate with the right level of detail. You are open to the ideas of others.</li> <li>The creativity and adaptability. You can adapt quickly, innovate solutions and embrace the new while accepting the ambiguous.</li> <li>The Agile experience. You believe in the Agile methodology deeply but you are flexible and open to the real world twists and turns.</li> <li>The hands-on expertise. You have hands-on professional experience developing large complex web-based applications. Your strengths might lie in UI based technologies, Java or database development technologies. Bonus points for experience with the Alexa Skills kit or Google Actions SDK.</li> <li>The extra knowledge.
