The Director of Safety will provide safety leadership, support, and coordination for key transportation divisions. The Director of Safety will be an ambassador for safety and will work closely with the company&rsquo;s safety council. The Director of Safety will provide safety leadership, support, and coordination for key transportation divisions. This position is responsible for the divisions in B.C., Alberta, and Ontario, so travel is required with a start date as soon as possible. <strong>Previous experience in safety as it relates to fleet / transportation is essential to succeed in this position.<br /><br /></strong></p> <p><strong><u>Reporting </u></strong></p> <ul> <li>This position reports to the Vice President of Transit;</li> <li>Additionally, there is a dotted line relationship with the Vice President of Motorcoach for activities within that Line of Business;</li> <li>There are no direct reports.</li> </ul> <p><strong><u>Objectives</u></strong></p> <ul> <li>Ensure the Lines of Business have the highest safety rating and are continually in compliance with all regulations;</li> <li>Reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of collisions, workers&rsquo; compensation injury claims, and other losses;</li> <li>Ensure the Lines of Business have applied sufficient due diligence to minimize the possibility of litigation;</li> <li>Progress with these objectives will be assessed during the yearly performance review.</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p>
Responsibilities: <ul> <li>Ensure Regulatory Compliance<br /> <ul> <li>Canada and the USA;</li> <li>Fleet safety, workplace safety, and environmental regulations;</li> <li>Monitor/manage carrier profiles;</li> <li>Coordinate and manage internal and external audits/inspections;</li> <li>Liaise with Government agencies to keep informed and to provide feedback and special requests.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>Provide Collision File Oversight <ul> <li>Work with insurance staff and assigned adjusters;</li> <li>3<sup>rd</sup> party at fault claims recovery oversight.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>Provide Workers&rsquo; Compensation Claims Oversight <ul> <li>Return to work programs;</li> <li>Enroll in and monitor COR programs;</li> <li>Claims management and appeals oversight.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>Own Safety KPI Process <ul> <li>Capturing, reporting, and following up oversight;</li> <li>Assist with yearly budget and action plans;</li> <li>Trend analysis;</li> <li>Assist managers to accomplish their targets and respond to problems.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>Connect, Promote, and Engage <ul> <li>Help ensure that Core Values and Safety Vision are communicated in ways to employees and clients for clear comprehension;</li> <li>Participate in award and recognition programs;</li> <li>Encourage and promote &ldquo;Small Group Safety Meetings&rdquo;;</li> <li>Promote safety awareness and visibility.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>Measure, Monitor, and Mentor <ul> <li>Gather, organize, analyze, and report out on a variety of safety performance data and assist management in their response;</li> <li>Support Line VPs, Managers, and Safety Specialists.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>Conduct Investigations <ul> <li>Collision/incident investigation process oversight;</li> <li>Liability and preventability determination;</li> <li>Root cause analysis.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>Stay Current with Technology <ul> <li>Telematics/IVMS oversight;</li> <li>Monitor new collision avoidance technologies.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>Liaise with Training <ul> <li>Coordinate and connect with the Centre for Innovation and Excellence (CIE), and with Line/Division/Branch Training Departments;</li> <li>Ensure that safety KPI, trends, root cause analysis results, etc. are embraced by training departments.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>Liaise with Operations <ul> <li>Coordinate and connect with the Operations management and staff;</li> <li>Assist Operations with emergency response procedures, safety KPI follow up, compliance with regulations, policies, &amp; procedures, etc.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>Provide Cost of Safety Oversight <ul> <li>Assess all safety initiatives against the time/money required to ensure there is enough value provided to the company and clients;</li> <li>Use benefits case method to develop and assess new initiatives;</li> <li>Right size programs to match the size and needs of each organization;</li> <li>Promote a targeted strategic goals approach;</li> <li>Work closely with Finance team to ensure the KPI and Cost of Safety process is accurate, consistent, and reliable.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>Manage Safety Perception Survey Process <ul> <li>Assist managers to administer the yearly survey;</li> <li>Analyze Line/Division/Branch results and assist managers to respond.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>Work in the Field <ul> <li>Liaise with clients, passengers, the public, and industry as required;</li> <li>Support branches with route assessments, incident investigation/follow up, monitoring, etc. as requested.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>Develop Policies and Procedures <ul> <li>Assist reviewing, developing, updating the variety of manuals including an Emergency Response Manual and Business Continuity Plan;</li> <li>Seek out, capture, adapt, and document industry best practices.</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>Attend/Conduct Meetings <ul> <li>Participate in Safety Council, Safety Conference, Line/Division/Branch Safety Meetings, etc.;</li> <li>Develop and conduct presentations as required.</li> </ul> </li> </ul>
Requirements: <p><strong><u>Desired Qualifications and Experience</u></strong></p> <ul> <li>Previous experience in safety as it relates to fleet / transportation is essential;</li> <li>Completion of a college or university degree in a Management related field; specifically, certification in Occupational Health and Safety;</li> <li>CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) or NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer);</li> <li>7 or more years&rsquo; experience in an HSE leadership role with demonstrated team development and team building success;</li> <li>Litigation experience considered an asset;</li> <li>Knowledge of applicable HSE regulations, codes, practices and standards;</li> <li>Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel;</li> <li>Ability to multi-task in a multi-office/location organization;</li> <li>Exceptional verbal and written communication skills;</li> <li>Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality;</li> <li>Clear driver&rsquo;s abstract;</li> <li>Valid class 1 or 2Q license preferred.</li> </ul>
