Overview: <p>The City of Lansing Treasury and Income Tax Office is seeking a Full Time Income Tax Auditor to add to their Income Tax Auditor team with the opportunity for professional growth and continuing education.</p> <p>The primary goal of this position is to provide services to the City and taxpayers. Its function is to perform audits and contribute to the compliance of established policies, guidelines, laws and regulations.</p> <p><strong><u>ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:</u></strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; Office environment, and occasionally, construction sites.</p>
Responsibilities: The essential position functions listed below do not include all functions, which may be found in this position as duties, and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or modified at any time.<br /><br /> <ul> <li>Reviews returns and works with taxpayers to ensure all taxes are paid pursuant to the tax code. Enters and retrieves wide range of information using the City's income tax software system.</li> <li>Functions as a lead worker for income tax audit functions including providing training to other audit staff and dealing with taxpayer questions to ensure all owed taxes are paid.</li> <li>Coordinates and, in some cases conducts, tax return audits.</li> <li>Accumulates data needed for the collection of delinquent income taxes and submits this information to the Collection Investigators or outside collection agency.</li> <li>Provides taxpayer assistance with income tax forms.</li> <li>Prepares tax statements for questionable returns and from fail-to-respond files including final assessment and penalty and interest charges.</li> <li>Analyzes and prepares financial reports, tax statements and related reports for the Income Tax Administrator.</li> <li>Drives an automobile to and from work sites.</li> </ul>
Requirements: <p>The City of Lansing reserves the right to utilize equivalencies where deemed appropriate with regard to education and experience requirements.</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration</li> <li>And three (3) years of professional tax experience to include tax preparation (individual and corporate) auditing and accounting</li> <li>Or an equivalent combination of training and experience.</li> <li>Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.</li> </ul> <p><strong><u>KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS &amp; ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:</u></strong>&nbsp;</p> <p>Knowledge of the IRS Tax Code. Knowledge of the City Income Tax Ordinance preferred. Knowledge of accounting principles pertaining to the preparation of individual and business returns. Knowledge of accounting related to the preparation of financial statements.</p> <p>Skill in the use of a personal computer with various word processing, spreadsheet and specialized tax software programs. Skill in designing and performing comprehensive audits on corporate, partnership and individual tax returns and performing detailed compliance audits of employer's records in the field. Skill in preparing a wide range of reports.</p> <p>Ability to properly retain and dispense confidential information. Ability to provide work direction and training to others. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and taxpayers.&nbsp; Ability to work independently.
