Responsibilities: <p><strong><u>ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:</u></strong> <strong>(Reasonable accommodations will be provided, if necessary, for individuals with disabilities who can perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.&nbsp; Should you need any disability related accommodation in the application and/or selection process, please contact the Department of Human Resources).</strong></p> <p><strong>The essential position functions listed below do not include all functions, which may be found in this position as duties, and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or modified at any time.</strong></p> <ul> <li>Performs preventative maintenance inspections on cars, generators, trucks, complex construction equipment, fire apparatus and other related powered equipment.</li> <li>Performs diagnostic and corrects problems for defective functions of air and hydraulic brake systems, steering, fuel pumps, exhaust systems, electrical connections, engines, power take offs, hydraulic systems and drive trains.</li> <li>Rebuilds and rehabilitates hydraulic pumps, fire pumps, motors, diesel and gas engines, transmissions, and brakes.</li> <li>Mounts and repairs specialized safety equipment, designs and fabricates devices using welding and cutting equipment within controlled garage equipment.</li> <li>May be required to perform welding or similar duties in an uncontrolled environment from time to time in order to repair equipment at an outside location.</li> <li>May perform welding repairs on all types of vehicles and equipment.</li> <li>Cleans and disinfects vehicles involving bodily fluids.</li> <li>Installs equipment on trucks including snow-plows and frames, underbody scrappers, dump truck bodies, saltboxes, sand spreaders, and trailer hitches.</li> <li>Troubleshoots, repairs, rebuilds, and replaces hydraulic valves and cylinders requiring use of testing equipment.</li> <li>Maintains and repairs welding and cutting equipment.</li> <li>Mounts and repairs specialized safety equipment and may be exposed to significant levels of smoke, dust, and chemical odors, which may require the use of safety devices for personal protection.</li> <li>Conducts safety checks on vehicles and equipment.</li> <li>Makes service calls driving a variety of vehicles, which may include pickups, four wheel drive and two/five speed type transmission vehicles. Responds to emergencies for vehicle and equipment maintenance outside of the Garage Complex.</li> <li>Cleans shop area using a variety of chemicals and cleaning agents such as mineral spirits, industrial solvents, de-greasers, etc., and a variety of cleaning equipment such as: steam cleaners, safety tank cleaners, brooms, shovels and hand held sprayers. Works on and operates street sweepers.</li> <li>Operates a personal computer.</li> <li>Prepares and maintains handwritten and computer generated work records of garage activities on a daily basis.</li> <li>Provide verbal and written instructions regarding work orders and other job functions.</li> <li>Cleans equipment and work spaces using a wide range of solvents and other cleaning agents.</li> </ul>
Requirements: <p><strong><u>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS &amp; TRAINING:</u></strong> <strong>Failure to obtain or maintain job required qualifications will result in appropriate action consistent with the provision of the Appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement or Personnel Rules.</strong></p> <ul> <li>Applicants for this position must possess a Michigan Motorcycle Operators Endorsement or obtain this endorsement within ninety (90) days of hire.</li> <li>Applicants for this position must possess and maintain a valid Michigan CDL License, Group B, with Air Brakes and N Endorsement or obtain this license and endorsement within ninety (90) days of hire.</li> <li>Must participate in MDOT Drug &amp; Alcohol program.</li> <li>Must participate in a Hepatitis B inoculation program at the City's expense.</li> <li>Must complete Industrial Truck Training and Certification.</li> <li>Must complete Confined Space Training.</li> <li>Must complete Blood Borne Pathogens Training.</li> <li>May require overtime or shift work for snow and ice control operations and other emergencies and/or other work assignments</li> </ul> <p><strong><u>EDUCATION &amp; EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: </u></strong><strong>The City of Lansing reserves the right to utilize equivalencies where deemed appropriate with regard to education and experience requirements.</strong></p> <ul> <li>High School Diploma or GED</li> <li>Two (2) year certification in heavy truck and/or auto repair or completion of a two (2) year apprenticeship in heavy truck or auto repair and/or any ASE certifications are preferred.</li> <li>Four (4) years of experience in repairing vehicles and heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and work experience.</li> </ul> <p><strong><u>REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS &amp; ABILITIES:&nbsp;</u></strong></p> <p>Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and standard practices of mechanical repair work in the areas of: Drive trains, brakes, suspension, steering, hydraulics, pumps, diesel engines, electrical and electrical systems, preventive maintenance and inspection on vehicles and equipment; maintenance and repair of braking, hydraulic, electrical, engine, and drive train systems; hazards and safety precautions of the trade; techniques and practices of welding operations including mig and stick welding machines and the use of cutting torches.</p> <p>Skill in maintaining and repairing wide range of vehicles and equipment; locating and diagnosing malfunctions; operating wide range of tools and equipment safely and efficiently; reading and interpreting manuals; computers and electronic.</p> <p>Ability to operate vehicle-hoisting devices; follow verbal and written instructions; communicate; complete work orders; to work independently; maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.</p> <p><strong><u>PHYSICAL CAPACITY REQUIREMENTS:</u></strong></p> <p>This position requires the individual through assistance or on their own to walk, climb, sit, stand, reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, lift, carry, hear, depth perception, and visual acuity and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and 100 pounds on occasion.</p>
