Overview: <p><strong>THIS POSITION REQUIRES SHIFT WORK AND APPLICANTS MUST BE ABLE TO WORK ANY DAY OF THE WEEK OR ANY HOUR OF THE DAY WITHOUT RESTRICTION. THE COMMON WORK SCHEDULE IS A 12-HOUR SHIFT WITH OVERTIME ASSIGNMENTS ON A REGULAR BASIS</strong><strong><u><br /></u></strong></p> <p><strong><u>ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS OF POSITION:</u></strong></p> <ul> <li>Detention facility environment. Verbal abuse is common and there is a possibility of physical assault from prisoners.</li> <li>Possible exposure to full range of human bodily fluids including blood and urine from prisoners.</li> </ul>
Responsibilities: <p><strong><u>ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:</u></strong><strong> Reasonable accommodations will be provided, if necessary, for individuals with disabilities who can perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.&nbsp;&nbsp; Should you need any disability related accommodation in the application and/or selection process, please contact the Department of Human Resources</strong></p> <p><strong>The essential position functions listed below do not include all functions which may be found in this position as duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or modified at any time.</strong></p> <ul> <li>Fingerprint, photograph and obtain DNA samples.</li> <li>Administer daily PBT's for Pre-sentence offenders.</li> <li>Supervise detainees for Pretrial Service interviews.</li> <li>Conduct arraignments for all felony and domestic in custody cases.</li> <li>Daily supervision of the Ingham County inmate worker.</li> <li>Responsible for the emergency building evacuation of all detainees when necessary.</li> <li>Daily preparation and release of all arraigned detainees to the Ingham County Jail.</li> <li>Operates the departments' main LEIN terminal and responds to all LEIN/NCIC local and federal confirmation requests.</li> <li>Attaches tags to property of prisoners and provides for proper storage of these items.</li> <li>Issues food and medicine, as prescribed, to prisoners.</li> <li>Escorts prisoners to and from their cells, and may accompany Court Officers with them to judicial proceedings.</li> <li>Types and records bails, bonds and other forms for prisoner release using finger dexterity on a standard computer keyboard.</li> <li>Takes runaway reports and enters the information on the LRMS (Lansing Report Management System) computer terminal requiring finger dexterity and the ability to read information off a video display screen.</li> <li>Writes hand-written reports regarding runaways, mental petitions and other job related matters taking care to ensure legibility.</li> <li>Maintains the Daily bulletin which is a record of serious accidents to officers, special attentions, attempts to locate felony warrants and other pertinent information for all police personnel.</li> <li>Makes LEIN (Law Enforcement Information Network) checks on all prisoners lodged in the lockup using finger dexterity on a computer terminal.</li> <li>Assists detention supervisor in ordering and putting away detention supplies.</li> <li>Completes any other tasks as directed by a supervisor</li> </ul>
Requirements: <p><strong><u>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS &amp; TRAINING:</u></strong> <strong>Failure to obtain or maintain job required qualifications will result in appropriate action consistent with the provision of the Appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement or Personnel Rules.</strong></p> <ul> <li>The person selected to fill this position will be required, as a condition of employment, to participate in a Hepatitis B inoculation program at the City's expense.</li> <li>This position requires that the applicant be able to be bonded under terms of the City's blanket bond. Therefore applicants cannot have committed any dishonest acts before or after placement in this position.</li> <li>Applicants must authorize the release of any information from appropriate agencies regarding the applicant's criminal history.</li> </ul> <p><strong><u>EDUCATION &amp; EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:</u></strong><strong>&nbsp; The City of Lansing reserves the right to utilize equivalencies where deemed appropriate with regard to education and experience requirements.</strong></p> <ul> <li>High School Diploma or GED</li> <li>Available to work days, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime</li> <li>Computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel</li> <li>An Associate's Degree in any related field (preferred)</li> <li>Corrections Officer Vocational Program or the County and Local Detention Officer program requiring a minimum of 23 term or 15 semester credits approved by the Corrections Commission and the State Civil Service Commission (preferred)</li> <li>Bilingual (preferred)</li> <li>Experience working with persons with disabilities i.e. mental illnesses, substance abuse, and etc. (preferred)</li> </ul> <p><strong><u>KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS &amp; ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:</u></strong></p> <p>Knowledge of the laws, rules and procedures involved in the care and custody of prisoners in municipal detentions; as well as, knowledge of general office procedures.</p> <p>Skill in maintaining records and files and operating a computer terminal preferred.</p> <p>Ability to ensure prisoner safety including subduing uncooperative prisoners and retain and dispense confidential information, Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and spell accurately, Ability to work under pressure, Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and deal effectively with the general public and prisoners.<br /><br /><strong><u>PHYSICAL CAPACITY REQUIREMENTS:</u></strong></p> <ul> <li>This position requires the individual through assistance or on their own have the abilities of Standing, walking, grasping, pulling, pushing, reaching, seizing, holding, turning, speaking, hearing, listening, lifting, finger dexterity and/or feeling and visual acuity.</li> <li>Must be able to pass the City of Lansing's respirator physical and be able to wear a respirator.</li> <li>Must be able to don a Scot Air Pack/Gas Mask</li> </ul>
