Overview: Wastewater Treatment Operators must have a working knowledge of the operation, maintenance and cleaning of primary and secondary wastewater treatment equipment and facilities, wastewater treatment principles, safety rules, first aid, chemical handling, wastewater sampling and process control tests.
Responsibilities: <ul> <li>Based on license level, independently or under supervision operates or checks the operation of all plant equipment (i.e., pumps, valves, electric motors, filters, large stationary engines, etc.) at a main water/sewage treatment plant.</li> <li>Routes flow of water/sewage fluids and gases.</li> <li>Inspects operating equipment.</li> <li>Performs minor preventative maintenance.</li> <li>Collects samples.</li> <li>Performs routine laboratory&nbsp;analyses.</li> <li>Maintains log of activities.</li> <li>Regulates and helps maintain records of flow, tank level, chemical feed rates, etc., between various stages of treatment.&nbsp;</li> <li>Reads meters and gauges.</li> <li>Performs tests of water including pH, chlorine, residual, conductivity, turbidity, etc.</li> <li>Conducts standardized tests.</li> <li>Maintains operating logs at all plants/stations.</li> <li>Cleans, oils, and performs minor preventive maintenance on pumps, motors and similar equipment.</li> <li>Keeps plant facilities clean and orderly.</li> <li>The intent of this class description is to provide a representative summary of the types of duties and responsibilities that will be required of classifications given this title and shall not be construed as a declaration of the specific duties and responsibilities of any particular position. Requirements: Minimum QualificationsQualifications Based on Position Desired and Include:<br />&nbsp;<br /><strong>APPRENTICE:</strong><br />High School diploma or GED.<br />Must participate in math and reasoning skills testing.<br />Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License is required<br /><br /><strong>WASTEWATER LICENSE CLASS C:</strong><br />&bull; Two (2) years of college with major course work in chemistry, biology, or environmental sciences.<br />&bull; One (1) year of experience in the operation of a unit of a large water/wastewater treatment plant.&nbsp;<br />&bull; Must possess a Class "C" Florida Operator's Certificate.<br />&bull; Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License is required.<br /><br /><strong>WASTEWATER LICENSE CLASS B:</strong><br />&bull; Two (2) years of college with major course work in chemistry, biology, or environmental sciences.<br />&bull; Three (3) years of experience in the operation of a unit of a large water/wastewater treatment plant.&nbsp;<br />&bull; Must possess a Class "B" Florida Operator's Certificate.<br />&bull; Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License is required.<br /><br /> <p><strong>JOB BASED COMPETENCIES:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Working knowledge of machines, equipment, materials and operating procedures of a water or wastewater treatment plant.</li> <li>Working knowledge of the safety factors involved in handling water/sewage plant equipment.</li> <li>Working knowledge of computers, radio telemetry and SCADA systems.</li> <li>Ability to conduct laboratory tests, make accurate readings and keep routine records.</li> <li>Ability to understand and carry out complicated written and oral work orders.</li> <li>Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and with the general public.</li> <li>Ability to work overtime, various shifts, weekends, holidays and be on call.</li> <li>Ability to effectively communicate with the public.</li> </ul> <strong>PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:</strong><br />This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Work requires considerable physical activity including walking, lifting, reaching, stooping, pulling, grasping, balancing, climbing, kneeling, standing, and crouching. Worker is subject to inside and outside activities with a variety of weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards, and atmospheric conditions. Visual acuity is required to operate plant equipment and perform maintenance tasks. Worker is required to hear sufficiently to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Manual dexterity is required to operate equipment in performance of duties.
