Overview: <p>Under direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and Surgical Team members, responsible for the handling of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during general to moderately complex surgical procedures. Ensures understanding of the assigned surgical procedures being performed and anticipates the needs of the assigned surgeon and surgical team members. Also provides service support related to patient preparation, patient transport, and assisting surgical care team with specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs. Responsibilities: <p><strong>Principal Duties and Responsibilities</strong>:</p> <ul> <li>Demonstrates and applies knowledge of advanced surgical techniques.</li> <li>Scrubs on general to moderately complex surgical procedures.</li> <li>Demonstrates critical thinking skills in relation to anticipating the perioperative needs of the patient and surgeon.</li> <li>Prepares the operating room by setting table, instruments and supplies according to type of surgery.</li> <li>Assures proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use and reports needed repairs appropriately.</li> <li>Follows established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards and reports and corrects non-compliance.</li> <li>Displays cost-consciousness in the opening of sterile supplies and in the care and handling of surgical instruments.</li> <li>Assist RN in admitting, transferring and discharging patients.</li> <li>Maintains a safe and clean room environment; keeps room free from clutter, cleans and stocks rooms, returns equipment and supplies to designated storage locations, helps maintain cleanliness of assigned areas.</li> <li>Provides comfort and support for pre-operative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient&rsquo;s care and privacy.</li> <li>Exhibits a higher level of collaboration with peers in making decisions related to surgical patient care.</li> <li>Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures and communicates situation to appropriate people.</li> <li>Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environment standards.</li> <li>Actively participates in the shared governance/process to promote team practice.</li> </ul>
Requirements: <p><strong>Education/Experience Required:</strong></p> <ul> <li>High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.</li> <li>Specific knowledge of surgical procedures within the operating room (OR), in addition to knowledge of surgical procedures, practices and techniques in providing patient care and assisting surgeons in the O.R.</li> <li>Successful completion of the Surgical Tech level l competencies to advance to a Level ll Surgical Tech or successfully demonstrated skills that meet the Level l competencies gained thru outside experience, minimum of two years of experience as a Surgical Technologist or six months specialized patient care training in the armed forces.</li> <li>Physical ability to stand for long periods of time and lift anesthetized patients to position them for surgical procedures.</li> </ul> <strong>Certifications/Licenses Required</strong>:<br /> <ul> <li>Current BLS required.</li> <li>Graduate of CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) accredited Surgical Technology program.</li> <li>Surgical Technologist certification preferred.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Preferred qualifications:</strong></p> <ul> <li>2 or more years of multispecialty type cases.</li> <li>Willingness to learn new procedures and specific of case types.</li> <li>Great communication skills.</li> </ul>
