Overview: <p style="font-weight: 400;">Position manages the direct supervisors and operations of the kennel section of the agency.&nbsp; Provides for animal care, maintenance, disease control, animal handling &amp; assessment, and responds to urgent operational needs impacting staff, volunteers, the public and animals in the shelter.&nbsp; Position strategically manages population movement and necessary euthanasia performed with state laws and local ordinance.&nbsp; Operates independently with broad discretion/decision making authority w/o prior approval required.&nbsp; Works closely with the veterinary and enforcement sections with regard to animal population.</p>
Responsibilities: <ul> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Exercise independent judgement and decision making regarding potential risk assessment with animals and disease of a large operational public shelter.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Reviews and monitors assignments of subordinate staff and line supervisors; approves performance evaluations, discipline, and other kennel management operations; provides guidance and training.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Develops, reviews, revises and instructs others on shelter program(s) for behavior and adoptabiliity determination programs to assist Division Director in population management/live outcome rates.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Determines purchasing schedules, needs, and monitors inventory for kennel-related supplies; continually looks for cost improvements and best practices for product selection and usage; assesses staff needs and identifies shortfalls, interviews, recruits and&nbsp;</span><span style="font-size: medium;">hires new staff.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Performs routine maintenance and schedules/assists with larger projects utilizing facilities management operations; establishes schedules for preventive maintenance and determines life cycle of various products and equipment-managing for budgetary purposes.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Develops standard operating procedures for kennel operations for cleaning, maintenance, feeding, animal movement &amp; placement, and others as needed for daily operations; reviews and acts on administrative and operational problems.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Coordinates with other sections within Pet Resources and with outside agencies; seeks specialized placement of working dogs with law enforcement and other agencies-research needs, protocols, requirements and establishes/maintains relationships.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Performs other related duties as required.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></li> </ul>
Requirements: <ul style="font-weight: 400;"> <li>Graduation from an accredited four year degree granting college or university in Business Management, animal behavior, public administration, animal science; AND</li> <li>Three years of experience directly related to the position duties, one of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.</li> <li>An equivalent combination of education (not less than a high School Diploma/GED,) training, and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted below; AND</li> <li>Florida Euthanasia Certification per Statute Chapter 828 (within first 6 months of employment); AND</li> <li>Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.</li> </ul> <p style="font-weight: 400;"><strong><u>Job Specifications</u></strong></p> <ul style="font-weight: 400;"> <li>Extensive knowledge of the mechanisms of zoonotic disease transmission and measures to control and eliminate microorganisms, bacteria, viruses and common animal shelter diseases.</li> <li>Working knowledge of animal triage.</li> <li>Knowledge of animal behavior and management/modification.</li> <li>Knowledge of sanitation and environmental controls.</li> <li>Excellent to superior animal handling.&nbsp; Manage multiple shift schedules on a 365 working day basis.</li> <li>Basic maintenance skills including manual and power tools.</li> <li>Handling hostile and diseased animals with potential person risk in a manner to limit risks to other people and animals; excellent computer skills including spreadsheet creation.</li> <li>Ability to prepare complex tracking reports; ability to identify symptoms of potentially transmittable conditions, zoonotic diseases, and common shelter medical conditions.</li> <li>Ability to clearly communicate observations to veterinary staff; ability to utilize sound independent judgement when making urgent decisions on herd health issues.&nbsp; Ability to assess animal behavior and temperament.</li> <li>Ability to work with large numbers of cats and dogs daily; ability to prioritize multiple projects; ability to perform preventative maintenance and work with facilities to identify building maintenance needs.</li> <li>Ability to maintain files and prepare work related reports.</li> <li>Ability to work under stressful conditions.</li> <li>Ability to collect, analyze and evaluate information and develop logical conclusions.</li> <li>Ability to use a computer and related software.</li> <li>Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.</li> <li>Ability to work effectively with others.</li> </ul> <p style="font-weight: 400;"><u>Physical Requirements</u>..</p> <ul style="font-weight: 400;"> <li>Frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to handle for feel; and reach with hands and arms.</li> <li>Requires indoor and outdoor work in an animal kennel operation, works around and with harsh chemicals and controlled drugs.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li> <li>Loud noise, wet conditions and dust/dander are regular occurrences.</li> </ul>
