Overview: Performs professional public relations duties by planning the timely development, administration, and release of information regarding programs and services to foster and improve media and community relations for Hillsborough County via social media and digital engagement platforms. The social media strategist is responsible for researching and recommending strategies to engage customers in new ways and build brand recognition. Individuals performing this work must post and respond on all channels using the highest level of professionalism, tact, and courtesy to provide quality, accurate, and timely messaging. Social media strategist work is highly complex and broad in scope. The social media strategist works independently to develop the County's social media content and messaging, and provide advice and consultation to department directors and the County management on social media strategy, policy, and practices. May oversee the work of other employees. The position requires independent judgment in the handling of extremely delicate/sensitive relationships when relaying complex situations to the public. The position requires a high level of analytical ability and inductive thinking in order to pro-actively and effectively communicate the mission and goals of the County set forth by senior leadership.
Responsibilities: <p>Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.</p> <ul> <li>Researches and recommends platforms and best practices for use by the County. Provides professional consultation to Communications and County administration as to&nbsp;social media strategy, and contributes to the development of integrated communication plans.</li> <li>Attends meetings as needed and works with department representatives and directors concerning projects, programs, and special events.</li> <li>Exercises independent professional judgment on social media planning, content, and messaging.</li> <li>Calculates and reports appropriate engagement metrics for each&nbsp;social media platform used by the County.</li> <li>May oversee the work of teammates engaged in maintaining social media platforms.</li> </ul> <p>Knowledge, skills, behaviors, and abilities would include:</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of graphics including skill in photography/videography, design, or publishing.</li> <li>Expert knowledge of social media platforms, their primary functions, and audience of each platform.</li> <li>Strong customer service skills and experience.</li> <li>Proven knowledge in deciphering analytics and using research for plan development with an emphasis on social media and new media.</li> <li>A high degree of analytic ability and inductive thinking is required to devise new, non-standard approach to complex problems.</li> <li>Must be able to develop new and non-standard approaches.</li> <li>Ability to do long-range strategic planning for organizational effectiveness, and plan events that will occur during the year.</li> <li>Requires developing and maintaining positive ongoing external relationships with varying publics.</li> <li>Requires the handling of extremely delicate/sensitive relationships and complex situations, information, and materials.</li> </ul> <strong>Work Category</strong><br /><br />The Social Media Strategist works in an office environment, and uses a desktop or laptop computer daily. Travel within county limits is expected, as the SMS will attend County events, and will be meeting with other County departments. Candidate must possess a valid driver's license, and be able operate a vehicle safely and efficiently by following safety protocols and procedures at all times. This position requires off-hours availability.
Requirements: <strong>Minimum Qualifications</strong><br /> <ul> <li>Associate's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Public Administration, Marketing, Information Architecture, or related field; and One year of public relations experience.&nbsp;</li> </ul> <strong>OR</strong>&nbsp;<br /> <ul> <li>An equivalent combination of education (not less than a high school diploma), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job specific competencies listed above.&nbsp;</li> </ul> <strong>Job Specifications</strong><br /> <ul> <li>Knowledge of social media platforms, their primary functions, and audience of each platform.&nbsp;</li> <li>Knowledge in deciphering analytics and using research for plan development with an emphasis on social media and new media.&nbsp;</li> <li>Knowledge of customer service best practices.&nbsp;</li> <li>Skill in graphics, photography/videography, design, or publishing.&nbsp;</li> <li>Ability to demonstrate exemplary customer service skills.&nbsp;</li> <li>Ability to use analytical skills and inductive reasoning to devise new, non-standard approaches to complex problems.&nbsp;</li> <li>Ability to conduct long-range strategic planning for organizational effectiveness and to plan events that will occur throughout the year.&nbsp;</li> <li>Ability to develop and maintain positive ongoing external relationships with various groups.&nbsp;</li> <li>Ability to handle extremely delicate/sensitive relationships and complex situations, information, and materials.</li> </ul> <strong>Physical Requirements</strong><br /><br />The physical demands on the Social Media Strategist are minimal. Daily activity requires that the SMS sit at a work station for large portions of the day, but must be able to to get around the office to collaborate with coworkers, and to visit various departments throughout the building and the County for face-to-face interactions. The Social Media Strategist could expect to stand and/or walk during event coverage. No heavy lifting is required.
