Overview: <br /><strong>The Payroll Specialist I&nbsp;</strong>performs a variety of accounting duties in the collection, preparation, analysis, processing, and maintenance of a semi&shy;monthly payroll system; including entry and calculation of salary, incentives, stock, garnishments, non-pay events, taxes and benefits calculations; reviews timesheets and records salary adjustments as necessary; examines and verifies payroll; researches and analyzes discrepancies and processes appropriate corrections/adjustments.
Responsibilities: <br /> <ul> <li>Under direct supervision, calculate and process manual checks, bonus payments, leave of absence/new hire/terms adjustments, employee on leave payments, and other compensation events</li> <li>Monitor, research and clear uncashed payroll checks and transfer escheatment aged cash payments</li> <li>Participate in workforce management processing, including researching and correcting timecard inaccuracies to prevent under/over payments</li> <li>Provide explanations to employee population concerning their paycheck; gross pay, net pay, taxes, pre/post tax benefits, W-4 and W-2</li> <li>Support the payroll reconciliation process, including research and correction</li> <li>Prepare confidential scanning entries for DMS</li> <li>Assist in gathering information for internal/external financial audits, as needed</li> </ul>
Requirements: <br /> <ul> <li>Associate degree in Accounting/Finance and/or 3+ years of demonstrated entry-level experience in payroll and accounting practices</li> <li>Ability to follow strict standard operating procedures, and recognize when a situation requires escalation</li> </ul> <br /><br /><br /> <p>Horace Mann was founded in 1945 by two Springfield, Illinois, teachers who saw a need for quality, affordable auto insurance for teachers.
