Worksite Prod & Ops

Overview: Horace Mann is looking for a GROUP Underwriter II to join our team.&nbsp; Job duties will include performing risk appraisals to maximize revenues while minimizing risks consistent with underwriting guidelines for traditional group life, disability, and group worksite life, disability, critical illness, accident, and hospital indemnity products. &nbsp;The Group Underwriter II will provide accurate and timely evaluation and rating of prospects, new groups, amendments, and renewals.
Responsibilities: <ul> <li>Provide accurate and timely evaluation and rating of prospects, sold cases, plan change amendments and renewals through analysis of group&rsquo;s risk characteristics.</li> <li>Assure premium income adequately reflects the group&rsquo;s risk and that contracts meet legal and company standards.</li> <li>Manage assigned groups to ensure retention and profitability.</li> <li>Monitor rate and benefit changes to ensure timely, accurate, and profitable implementation of amendments.</li> <li>Maintain knowledge of contract provisions, OCI statues, insurance laws, and mandated benefits corresponding to benefits provided.</li> <li>Correspond with inside and outside marketing/sales personnel, actuarial and legal resources, systems, billing, administration, underwriting and claims to assess plan changes, extensions of coverage, and benefit changes.</li> <li>Respond to written and verbal inquiries from, sales personnel, and internal departments, including discussion of in-force policy provision, claims experience, technical aspects of specific financial arrangements and interpretation of legal statutes.</li> <li>Maintain effective working relationships with agents, brokers, and clients.</li> <li>Respond to inquiries in a personal, constructive manner.</li> <li>Maintain constructive relationships with reinsurers through professional communication and understanding of reinsurance agreements. Assure compliance with reinsurance underwriting standards and limitations.</li> <li>Perform proper documentation of underwriting files including but not limited to manual rates, rate calculations, phone conversations, and any written or verbal agreements.</li> <li>Develop innovative solutions for completion of special projects as necessary.</li> <li>Handle moderately complex cases within assigned authority limits. Complex cases still to be reviewed with Manager.</li> <li>Identify unusual, non-standard circumstances needing special consideration and escalate to senior levels and/or management.</li> <li>Assist in training and coaching of junior underwriting staff as needed.</li> </ul>
Requirements: <ul> <li>Bachelor&rsquo;s degree required, preferably in a field related to Math, Statistics, or Insurance Business.</li> <li>Periodic travel may be required.</li> <li>3+ years of experience in group life and disability environment required.</li> <li>Demonstrated knowledge of underwriting concepts and techniques of general group insurance and benefit funding designs/methodology.</li> </ul>
