Engineer

Overview: Responsible for electrical engineering activities related to designing, constructing, operating and maintaining electric transmission and distribution facilities. Most projects will involve some or all the following activities: investigations, studies, estimating, economic evaluations, budgeting, scheduling, designing, drawing development and review, construction, training, commissioning and project management.
Responsibilities: <ul> <li>Conducts engineering studies, performs field investigations, and reviews operation and maintenance records and test data. Makes recommendations for improvements to the T&amp;D System.</li> <li>Develops near term and long-term plans and planning documents for the BWL T&amp;D infrastructure based on engineering analysis and planning criteria.</li> <li>Drafts reports and tracks metrics for T&amp;D system reliability and performance.&nbsp; Creates technical designs for new and modified utility systems to support the integrity of the BWL&rsquo;s utility infrastructure. Follows BWL construction and procedural standards.&nbsp;</li> <li>Allocates materials, prepares work orders, sketches, estimates, easements, etc. and releases complete work packages to planning and construction resources.&nbsp;</li> <li>Performs staking and provides technical support to construction personnel.&nbsp;</li> <li>Conducts field checks of work in progress and completed work as needed.&nbsp;</li> <li>Attends planning, pre-construction, and construction progress meetings and interfaces with crews, contractors, developers, property owners, etc. to facilitate completion of T&amp;D work as needed.&nbsp;</li> <li>Acts as a technical resource for internal and external personnel relating the engineering, maintenance, support, and construction of T&amp;D systems.&nbsp;</li> <li>Manages outside consulting resources.&nbsp;</li> <li>Keeps abreast of industry, laws, codes (i.e., NESC), standards (i.e. IEEE), and regulations.</li> <li>Assists in the maintenance and development of T&amp;D Standards.&nbsp;</li> <li>Follows and enforces the BWL Safety Manual and wears personal protective equipment as required.</li> <li>Attends training for safety awareness and skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL, or governmental agency.</li> <li>Attends monthly safety meetings.&nbsp;</li> <li>Performs other duties as directed.</li> </ul>
Requirements: <ul> <li>Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university. 2-5+ years responsible engineering experience.</li> <li>Broad perspective of the utility business and knowledge of concepts and systems related to Electric T&amp;D. Thorough knowledge of fundamental engineering/economic principles and concepts.</li> <li>Knowledge or familiarity of applicable policies, rules, regulations, and codes related to Electric T&amp;D.</li> <li>Previous utility overhead and/or underground design experience.</li> <li>Knowledge or familiarity of principles, practices, and methods used in the construction of Electric T&amp;D systems.</li> <li>Skills and abilities in leadership, initiative, decision making, and clear and concise communication.</li> <li>Proficiency to review, evaluate, and analyze technical information, policies, and reports.</li> <li>Proficient knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.</li> <li>Valid driver&rsquo;s license with evidence of a safe driving record.</li> <li>Ability to communicate and present to varying work groups including: Management, engineering departments, construction workers, and vendors/suppliers.</li> </ul> <strong>Preferred: <br /><br /></strong> <ul> <li>Professional Engineering license. Electric utility experience. Demonstrated experience in technical writing. Experience with electric system modeling software such as ASPEN, PowerWorld, PLS-CADD, and Synergi.&nbsp;</li> <li>Grade commensurate with experience in design, construction, study, and planning of electric utility systems.&nbsp; Must hold Michigan PE license to advance to grade 4 or higher.</li> </ul>
