Overview: The Critical Care Clinical Pharmacy Manager oversees and directs clinical pharmacy services in the intensive care units (ICUs) and other high-acuity areas. This role ensures the delivery of safe, effective, and evidence-based medication therapy management, leads a team of clinical pharmacists, and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes. The manager is responsible for operational efficiency, staff development, quality improvement initiatives, and adherence to regulatory standards.
Responsibilities: <p><strong>Program Leadership</strong></p> <ul> <li>Provide expert clinical support for medication management in adult critical care settings.</li> <li>Develop, implement, and maintain evidence-based protocols, guidelines, and order sets for ICU pharmacotherapy.</li> <li>Review complex medication regimens and provide consultative recommendations to the critical care team.</li> <li>Participate in daily rounds with critical care teams to optimize pharmacologic therapy and ensure safe patient care.</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Clinical and Operational Oversight</strong></p> <ul> <li>Provide direct clinical support for complex medication management in critical care patients.</li> <li>Participate in daily ICU rounds to optimize pharmacotherapy decisions.</li> <li>Develop, implement, and monitor evidence-based protocols, order sets, and guidelines.</li> <li>Oversee operational pharmacy functions, including medication inventory, cost management, and workflow optimization.</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Education &amp; Collaboration</strong></p> <ul> <li>Educate healthcare providers, pharmacists, and trainees on critical care best practices.</li> <li>Participate in ICU rounds, ICU quality improvement committee meetings, health system critical care council</li> <li>Develop and deliver educational materials and in-services on critical care pharmacotherapy and disease management.</li> <li>Serve as a preceptor for PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residents and APPE (Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience) students, providing clinical instruction, mentorship, and evaluation during critical care rotations.</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Regulatory Compliance &amp; Reporting</strong></p> <ul> <li>Ensure compliance with state and federal pharmacy regulations and institutional policies.</li> <li>Maintain adherence to accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission, ASHP).</li> <li>Monitor and report adverse drug events, medication errors, and other safety metrics.</li> <li>Prepare and submit regulatory, operational, and performance reports as required.</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Research &amp; Performance Improvement</strong></p> <ul> <li>Lead and support research initiatives related to critical care pharmacotherapy.</li> <li>Design and conduct performance improvement projects aligned with hospital goals, regulatory requirements, and national standards.</li> <li>Collaborate with critical care physicians on protocol development, retrospective reviews, and prospective studies.</li> <li>Support pharmacy residents, students, and fellows in research projects, publications, and presentations related to critical care medicine.</li> <li>Maintain awareness of emerging literature, guidelines, and best practices to inform program development and evidence-based interventions.</li> </ul>
Requirements: <p><strong>Education &amp; Licensure</strong></p> <ul> <li>Doctor of Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy.</li> <li>Valid NYS Pharmacist license and registration.</li> <li>Completion of PGY2 Residency in critical care highly preferred.</li> <li>Board certification in critical care is (e.g., BCCCP) preferred.</li> </ul> <br /> <p><strong>Experience</strong></p> <ul> <li>Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.</li> <li>Experience in academic or teaching hospitals is desirable.</li> <li>Experience in research/performance improvement is desirable.</li> </ul> <br /> <p><strong>Knowledge &amp; Skills</strong></p> <ul> <li>Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, and teaching skills.</li> <li>Strong commitment to patient safety, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement.</li> </ul>
