Overview: Under general supervision, coordinates internal and external communication activities for projects, programs, events, and related efforts. Collaborates with staff on communication and dissemination strategies. Compiles and prepares material for dissemination through the National Academies email marketing and social media channels and on the division’s website. Assists in the development, design, and implementation of outreach and communication projects, using various media such as print, electronic, video, and web-based products. Produces online products for targeted audiences and the general public. Job has a strong project coordination component, requiring scheduling and tracking of multiple promotional activities across multiple divisional units.<br /><br />This is a professional role, reporting to a senior communications position and working as part of a team. It is not primarily a clerical or administrative support role. Over 1,000 professionals help lead the work of over 5,000 volunteers to coalesce the best thinking of the American scientific community.<br /><br />As part of an increasing emphasis on strategic integrated communications, The Office of the Chief Communications Officer (OCCO) is recruiting for a communications Associate to support the Division on Earth and Life Studies (DELS). DELS is one of seven program units of the National Academies. DELS conducts a range of activities where policy meets the life sciences, including the environment, geography, laboratory animal use, and natural resource issues. Responsibilities: <ul> <li>Assists in the design and implementation of the unit&rsquo;s outreach and communication activities and dissemination of related information of National Academies&rsquo; publications, events, and activities. Provides assistance and input to staff on communication and dissemination plans. Collaborates with staff to identify target audiences and appropriate vehicles for reaching those audiences.</li> <li>Participates in the production of electronic newsletters and other web-based and email outreach tools. Tracks and schedules promotional outreach for multiple divisional activities on email marketing channels. Assists in developing and improving the use of those channels to achieve communications goals.</li> <li>Assists in social media outreach. Develops social media posts including visual elements. Assists in the scheduling of posts. Assists in developing and improving the use of those channels to achieve communications goals.</li> <li>Researches and drafts materials, articles, web content and other digital products for outreach. Coordinates or collaborates with staff as needed to update web content.</li> <li>Investigates new resources/outlets for communicating the activities of the unit. Participates in networking activities and other publicity events. Identifies and develops collaborative activities with professional groups.</li> <li>Participates in the establishment of guidelines and formats for communication materials.</li> <li>Assists in the coordination of the work of vendors and contractors in producing and publishing materials and alternative products for dissemination, e.g., videos, and other interactive and virtual products and for freelance writing assignments.</li> <li>May represent the unit at events, exhibits, and meetings. Promotes meetings and events and sets up exhibit booths. Coordinates shipping, installation, and de-installation of items, as necessary. Handles logistics for these activities and provides on-site coordination during activities. Organizes volunteer participation in activities.</li> <li>May assist in the collection of metrics and analytics. Requirements: <p dir="LTR"><strong>Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: </strong>Ability to operate with appreciable latitude for independent judgment and action. Ability to solve problems of some variety and complexity. Ability to work successfully in a team environment. Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness. Ability to develop effective working relationships with co-workers, employees in other National Academies&rsquo; departments, and external customers. Excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees. Familiarity with best practices in social media and email marketing is desired.</p> <p dir="LTR"><strong>Minimum Education/Training Requirements: </strong>Bachelor&rsquo;s Degree in Communications or related field, or equivalent knowledge.</p> <p dir="LTR"><strong>Minimum Experience:</strong> One year of related professional experience.&nbsp;</p> <p dir="LTR"><strong>Physical Capabilities: </strong>Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time. Ability to access exhibition spaces.</p> <p dir="LTR"><strong>Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: </strong>None.</p> <p dir="LTR"><strong>Supervisory <span class="WLM2">Responsibilities/Controls:</span></strong> Reports to supervisor/manager. Sets objectives with supervisor.</p> <p dir="LTR"><strong>Work Environment:&nbsp;</strong>Hybrid Office/Telecommute environment with the ability to work remotely up to 50% of the time, with occasional travel between National Academies&rsquo; facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.</p>
