Overview: Req. No.: R0001505

The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) seeks a biostatistician to join the highly collaborative and productive research team at the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) in Hiroshima, Japan, as a member of the RERF Department of Statistics. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, hold a PhD degree in biostatistics, bioinformatics, statistics or related field, and have a demonstrated record of productivity in a relevant research area commensurate with the level of appointment. Preference will be given to candidates who have A background and interest in statistical genomics, genetic epidemiology, or bioinformatics in addition to training or experience in other methodological areas relevant to RERF’s research mission. The appointment can be made at the early to senior career levels with appointment level and salary commensurate with earned degrees and experience. NAS offers an outstanding package of benefits and relocation allowances for this position. Please contact Dr. Ourania Kosti, Principal Investigator at NAS (okosti@nas.edu) or Dr. Richard Sposto, Chief, Department of Statistics (rsposto@rerf.or.jp) for additional information. EOE, M/F/D/V

RERF is a bi-national foundation supported by the governments of the United States (the U.S. Department of Energy) and Japan (Ministry of Health Labour and Welfare) and is a global leader in the study of long-term effects of radiation exposure on human health and its interactions with genes, lifestyle, and environment. RERF and its predecessor, the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission, have studied the health of Japanese atomic bombing survivors since 1947. The NAS has a long-standing cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy to recruit and hire U.S. scientists to work at RERF.

RERF is located in historic buildings in Hijiyama Park, which overlooks modern Hiroshima City. The city has an excellent transportation system, including air and rail links to major international airports, an internationally accredited English-language primary and secondary school, and shopping, dining, and cultural amenities. Most NAS appointees at RERF live in the community and commute to work using public transportation, bike, or on foot.
Responsibilities:

The mission of the RERF Department of Statistics is to employ the expertise of its staff members to advance research in the health effects of ionizing radiation.

The successful candidate will spend the majority of time as a co-investigator on research protocols relevant to this scientific mission.

In this role, in collaboration with scientists in the RERF Departments of Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biosciences, and Epidemiology, the successful candidate will participate in essential ways in the design, analysis, interpretation and publication of studies of the health effect of ionizing radiation deriving from RERF’s historic cohorts: The Life Span Study of disease incidence and mortality in 120,000 atomic bomb survivors; the Adult Health Study of 25,000 survivors with longitudinal clinical follow-up since 1958, and; the study of disease incidence and mortality in the F1 cohort of 75,000 offspring of survivors, over 10,000 of whom additionally have clinical follow-up since 2002.

The successful candidate will in addition have the opportunity to collaborate in the design and analysis of genetic studies to investigate the underlying mechanisms of radiation-induced carcinogenesis and the heritable effects of parental radiation exposure using bio-samples collected longitudinally over 70 years and stored at RERF.

This is an exciting and important new direction of research at RERF in which the Department of Statistics will play a central role.

The successful candidate will devote the remaining time to independent research to develop new or extend existing statistical methods that are essential to the mission of RERF, or to propose and lead multidisciplinary studies that rely on computational or quantitative expertise.

RERF data provide a rich resource for the development and application of novel statistical methods. Important areas of emphasis in the Department are: design and analysis of epidemiology studies, design and analysis of longitudinal studies, risk estimation/dose-response modeling, radiation dosimetry, dosimetry error/measurement error, causal inference/mediation analysis, biologically based models, spatial statistics, and statistical genomics/genetic epidemiology/bioinformatics.
