Overview: <strong>Req. No.: R0001548<br /><br />JOB SUMMARY:</strong><br /><br />The Office of the Chief Communications Officer (OCCO) is hiring a Director of Communications for HMD. This strategic leader is the senior communications partner to HMD leadership and manages all communications activities for HMD while working closely with OCCO staff. The Director of Communications will lead a team responsible for creating, designing, and implementing strategic communications programs and products across a range of media including digital and social, print, video, email, webinars, newsletters and other collateral materials.<br /><br /><strong>ABOUT THE HEALTH AND MEDICINE DIVISION:</strong><br /><br />The Health and Medicine Division (HMD) is one of seven program units of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies). From alerting the public to the widespread problem of medical errors to drawing the blueprint for the future of nursing to setting the agenda for fighting the COVID pandemic, HMD aims to advise the nation and improve health. Our advice is steeped in science and led by evidence. For millions of people across the United States and around the globe, improving health is a matter of daily survival and well-being. Responsibilities: <p><strong>ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Develop and execute a HMD communications strategy, working with senior leadership from HMD and OCCO.&nbsp;</li> <li>Lead and execute the planning, development, and coordination of external communications programs, projects, events, and other types of outreach. &nbsp;</li> <li>Oversee strategic messaging, communications, e-mail marketing, and other digital content for HMD work in coordination with OCCO digital, distribution, media, and social media teams.&nbsp;</li> <li>Working with OCCO analytics team, track, evaluate and report the success of communications initiatives.&nbsp;</li> <li>Identify target audiences for program and project communications along with communications channels and appropriate messaging for those audiences.</li> <li>Coordinate communication and distribution planning and activities for projects within HMD and across other National Academies channels, including OCCO and the other divisions and units.</li> <li>Lead, mentor and supervise assigned staff. Form effective teams and cultivate a work environment that fosters teamwork.&nbsp;</li> <li>Provide training and strategic advice to HMD staff on communications and messaging.&nbsp;</li> <li>Ensure that HMD communications programs help build the reputation of the National Academies by complementing and supporting the communications strategies, policies and programs of the National Academies&nbsp;</li> <li>Review and approve cost projections and estimates of communications programs, activities, and events.</li> <li>Secure consultant services within the rules of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, and, working with project staff, manage consultants to be on time and within budget delivery of desired products.</li> </ul> <strong>NONESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES</strong><br /> <ul> <li>Related duties as required.</li> </ul>
Requirements: <strong>Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:&nbsp;</strong><br /> <ul> <li>Experience in managing successful communications programs for complex organizations, leveraging thought leadership and expert knowledge to build engagement and reputation. &nbsp;</li> <li>Strong capabilities to plan, organize, and execute communications strategies. &nbsp;</li> <li>Ability to solve intellectual problems of substantial variety and complexity using originality and ingenuity. &nbsp;</li> <li>Ability to operate using substantial latitude for independent judgment and action. &nbsp;</li> <li>Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness. &nbsp;</li> <li>Ability to work successfully in a team environment and to form and maintain effective teams within OCCO, HMD, and the broader National Academies. &nbsp;</li> <li>Excellent written and oral skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.</li> <li>Expertise in current communications methods and trends, data analysis of audiences and communications efforts.</li> <li>Experience in the use of electronic resources and software systems pertinent to e-mail-related newsletters and web-based conference systems.</li> <li>Experience in a communications agency, think tank, or with content marketing programs valued.</li> <li>Experience with Health and Medical issues a plus.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Minimum Experience:</strong> &nbsp;Eight years of related professional experience. Three years of supervisory experience.<br /><strong>Minimum Education/Training Requirements:</strong> &nbsp;Bachelor&rsquo;s degree and relevant professional experience. Master&rsquo;s degree or equivalent valued.<br /><strong>Physical Capabilities: </strong>&nbsp;Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.<br /><strong>Required Licenses, Certification or Registration:</strong> &nbsp;None.<br /><strong>Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: </strong>&nbsp;Reports to the National Academies Director of Division Communications. &nbsp;General direction is provided. &nbsp;Will supervise communications professional staff.</p>
