Business Development & Support Functions

Overview: <br />The Lead Accountant leads monthly accounting closes, financial analysis and reporting, and audit support preparation for the Society of Human Resource Management and its affiliates and subsidiaries. In accordance with GAAP and internal reporting practices, applies principles of accounting to produce accurate and timely financial statements as required by the Boards, Management, and others.<br /><br /> <p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">Work Environment:<br /><br /></span></strong>Work is regularly performed in a combination of office and conference settings and routinely uses standard office equipment. Travel Required: Occasional - 0-10%.</p>
Responsibilities: <br /> <ul> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Leads, organizes, and facilitates the overall monthly financial close process in order to produce timely and accurate financial statements, supporting schedules, and presentations.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Ensures accounting requirements are implemented, and Board and Management reporting needs are met.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Prepares accurate and timely financial statements for the consolidated SHRM companies on a monthly basis, including the statement of financial position, statement of activities, and statement of cash flow.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Records intercompany eliminations necessary for consolidation.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Coordinates, posts, and maintains all SHRM's journal entries, filing with documentation to support SHRM's general ledger.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Leads fixed assets, lease, and facility-related accounting and reporting. Oversees related systems and processes, works with capital asset and facility managers and staff to ensure efficient accounting processes. Activates, disposes, and reconciles fixed assets. Continually evaluates, identifies, and implements process changes for fixed assets accounting.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Prepares journal entries as assigned and ensures proper accompanying documentation. On a monthly basis, prepares reconciliations and analyses of balance sheet and income statement accounts as assigned, resolving discrepancies in a timely manner.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Prepares schedules in support of SHRM's external consolidated financial audit and helps ensure auditors' understanding of SHRM operations.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Coordinates and assists the Accounting Department with special projects as assigned. These projects may include, but are not limited to: Board reporting, externally and internally requested financial analysis, etc.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Prepare and complete special projects and analysis, including development and implementation of consolidated Accounting Operations department best practices.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Assists in the evaluation and testing of modified accounting systems or external databases used by other Departments to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial output.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Other duties and projects as assigned</span></li> </ul>
Requirements: <br /> <ul> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related areas required</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">CPA or master&rsquo;s degree in a related field preferred.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Minimum of eight (8) plus years of progressive accounting experience, preferably with a not-for-profit organization (a multi-structured organization requiring consolidations accounting) or a public accounting firm.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Must have an understanding of all elements of financial operations and their impact on the general ledger.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Must have strong knowledge of 501c6 nonprofit organizations with domestic and international operations.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Experience in NetSuite preferred</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), accounting terminology, accounting procedures</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external customers to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving, and results.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Expert Microsoft (MS) Excel skills and comprehensive knowledge of MS Word and MS PowerPoint.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Comprehensive knowledge of NetSuite ERP system and Adaptive Planning budgeting system preferred.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Ability to effectively communicate and present financial information verbally and in writing.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Self-disciplined and capable of completing job duties in a timely manner and with a high level of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Excellent problem solving and good decision-making skills.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Complete tasks within critical deadlines.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Maintain highest level of confidentiality.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Candidates must have a proven commitment to SHRM's six Guiding Principles:</span></li> <ul> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Bold Purpose</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Excellence &amp; Accountability&nbsp;</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Flexibility &amp; Agility&nbsp;</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Smart &amp; Curious&nbsp;</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Collaborative Openness</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Push Back to Move Forward&nbsp;</span></li> </ul> </ul> <p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;"><br />Certifications:<br /><br /></span></strong></p> <ul> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">CPA preferred</span></li> </ul> <p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;"><br />Physical Requirements:<br /><br /></span></strong></p> <ul> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodations.</span></li> <li><span style="font-size: medium;">Work is generally done sitting, talking, hearing, and typing.
