The employee will perform duties under the direction of management personnel. General assignments and goals are received from a superintendent, but the employee must be able to satisfactorily perform the work without close supervision. Employee interacts in a consistently pleasant and helpful manner to fellow employees, visitors, and citizens of the Charter Township of Van Buren and demonstrates the highest standards of internal and external customer service.</p>
Responsibilities: <p>An employee in this position may be called upon to perform any or all of the following essential job functions, duties and responsibilities. These examples are intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed by an employee assigned this classification and are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed in this position.</p> <ul> <li>Performs field maintenance and repair work of the utility distribution and collection systems and facilities serving the Township.</li> <li>Cleans, flushes and maintains sewer and water mains, catch basins, valve wells, lift stations, water tower, diversion chambers and manholes.</li> <li>Performs routine servicing and maintenance of equipment operated.</li> <li>Performs field work outdoors in a variety of weather and environmental conditions, including rain, snow, dust, dirt and chemicals.</li> <li>Required to be available to perform duties for operational problems, equipment, emergencies, storms, power outages and other emergencies deemed necessary by management after normal working hours, weekends and holidays.</li> <li>Collects water samples and performs flow tests through the use of various types of testing equipment.</li> <li>Lays, repairs and taps water and sewer mains; installs service connections and wyes; connects shutoff valves and stop-boxes.</li> <li>Performs locating and staking duties for the township utility distribution and collection systems.</li> <li>Performs tap inspection duties for the township utility distribution and collection system as needed.</li> <li>Performs related and incidental work as assigned.</li> <li>Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.</li> </ul>

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.</p> <p><strong><u>Environment</u></strong>: Work is performed primarily in an outdoor environment 95% of the time with some travel to different sites; when visiting parks or construction sites the incumbent may be required to walk on uneven and slippery surfaces, be exposed to all weather conditions, dust and pollen, and mechanical hazards such as construction equipment; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends and may be required to travel outside Township boundaries to attend meetings.</p> <p><strong><u>Physical</u></strong>: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to perform strenuous physical labor in all weather conditions and mobility to work in an outdoor field setting; to lift 50 to 100 lbs, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight; 5% of the time is operating office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; operation of heavy construction equipment, getting in and out of trucks and other commercial vehicles, climbing in and out of confined spaces, to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.</p> <p><strong><u>Vision</u></strong>: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.<br /><br /><strong><u>Hearing:</u></strong>&nbsp;Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.</p>
