Responsibilities: <p class="p1">An Employee in this position may be called upon to perform any or all of the following essential job functions, duties, and responsibilities. The following describe the general nature and level of work to be performed and is not construed as an exhaustive <br /><br />The Van Buren Township Recreation Department camp counselor position is a Monday -Friday minimum of 29 hours (not to exceed 130 hours monthly). Camp is held at the Van Buren Community Center. This program is an eight-week program for children grades K-3<sup>rd</sup> or 4<sup>th</sup> -7<sup>th</sup>. As a counselor you will be required to start work three weeks before camp official starts.</p>
Requirements: <ul class="ul1"> <li class="li1">A minimum of one full year of working with children.</li> <li class="li1">Ability to meet the physical demands of working with children in an outdoor setting.</li> <li class="li1">A degree in Education, Parks and Recreation Management or a related field is preferred.</li> <li class="li1">Must be certified in CPR and First Aid or become certified in which the Township will provide.</li> <li class="li1">Supervise children at all times during the 9:00 am -4:00 pm Camp Day. If hours exceed the stated time, counselors must make certain supervision is carried out until the child or children have safely departed.</li> <li class="li1">Must be on time for their shifts. If a counselor is running late or not able to make it to work, they must immediately call the Recreation Director or his/her designee, in order to make proper arrangements.</li> <li class="li1">Must help in the creation and implementation of arts/craft and games during the eight weeks of camp.</li> <li class="li1">Must attend weekly staff meetings. Meetings will be planned in advance.</li> <li class="li1">Must supervise and engage with campers in a respectful manner. <strong>No yelling, foul language or inappropriate actions will be tolerated between counselors/campers, counselors/counselors or counselors/parents. </strong></li> <li class="li1">Counselors will inform the Recreation Director or his/her designee of any problems or situations of a camper. If a parent is needed, the Recreation Director or designee must be notified.</li> <li class="li1">Counselors are encouraged to be at camp daily. Numerous absences will result in immediate dismissal. Must be able to work the eight weeks of camp.</li> <li class="li1">Counselors must engage with children at all times.<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp; </span>Personal cell phone usage during camp is not permitted.</li> <li class="li1">Must be able to attend CPR/First Aid Training, camp staff orientation and parent orientation. Dates will be made available in advance.</li> <li class="li1">Must possesses a valid Michigan Driver&rsquo;s License with reliable transportation to and from work.</li> </ul> <br /> <p class="p1"><span class="s1"><strong>Physical Abilities and Work Environment</strong></span></p> <p class="p2">&nbsp;</p> <p class="p3">The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job function</p> <p class="p3"><span class="s1"><strong>Environment</strong></span>: Work is performed primarily in the Community Center and outdoor environment 51% of the time with some standard office environment<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp; </span>work which includes travel to different sites; when visiting parks, the incumbent may be required to walk on uneven and slippery surfaces, be exposed to all weather conditions, dust and pollen;<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp; </span>if applicable to job functions, incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends and may be required to travel outside Township boundaries to attend meetings.</p> <p class="p3"><span class="s1"><strong>Physical</strong></span>: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to perform strenuous physical labor in all weather conditions and<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp; </span>mobility to work in an outdoor and<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp; </span>office setting; to lift, 50 to 100lbs,<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp; </span>carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.</p> <p class="p3"><span class="s1"><strong>Vision</strong></span>: See in the normal visual range with or without correction. <span class="s1"><strong>Hearing:</strong></span> Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.</p>
