Overview: <p>The Director of Engineering Strategy is responsible for developing and optimizing Ahold Delhaize USA&rsquo;s companywide design and engineering strategies and standards. The Director must synthesize best in class thinking across all engineering disciplines to specify and incorporate state of the art equipment and systems to achieve right sizing and optimal conditions for store environments, while balancing CapEx and future OpEx spend. A key function of this role will be to develop and grow relationships with internal and external key stakeholders and partners (e.g., Retail Operations, Manufacturers, Consultants, Maintenance and Energy teams, Engineering firms, etc.) and leverage these partnerships to deliver strategies and projects on behalf of the Store Development, Leasing and Facilities Services team.</p> <p>This role is also critical to reach net zero carbon emissions through leveraging 3rd party partnerships to derive solutions for carbon reduction (CR), especially with respect to refrigeration system designs with lowest possible global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants to achieve lowest total equivalent warming impacts (TEWI) and appropriate HVAC designs that are all electric with lowest possible GWP.</p> <p>The Director is a key decision maker and driver in delivering leading edge and best solutions for interim and longer-term plans to Leadership including developing and driving our electrification strategy. The Director is accountable for identifying all factors that will provide economic value-add to the business, including comprehensive analyses for return on capital and operating expense impacts that include Brand, regional climate, electricity grid and other factors.&nbsp;</p> <p>Our flexible/hybrid work schedule includes 3 in-person days at one of our core locations and 2 remote days.</p>
Responsibilities: RTZ Engineering strategy&nbsp;<br /> <ul> <li>Key partner to the Store Development (SD), Maintenance, and Energy teams and our 3rd party partners focused on Race to Zero (RTZ) options / alternatives.</li> <li>Responsible for collecting data points from existing and optimized energy benchmarking, architects, engineers, consultants, manufacturers, and ADUSA teams including Global Support Office (GSO), Sustainability, EU peers etc.; evaluating options, deriving solutions, and presenting recommendations for new, replacement and retrofit systems and equipment to SDLFS Leadership team.</li> <li>Responsible for evaluating all the data to determine if current equipment and systems operation may be optimized to reduce future electrical capacity needs for electrification.&nbsp;</li> <li>Responsible for balancing present equipment capacity and operational needs with future conceptual ideas to help craft strategy.</li> <li>Responsible for managing the ADUSA 17-year RTZ strategy (2024) tracker to ensure capital dollars and CR strategy are aligned.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li> </ul> Alternatives Analysis&nbsp;<br /> <ul> <li>Prepare proposals / financial analyses for projects that focus on design options for RHVAC, EMS, plumbing, and electrical systems that drive energy efficiency and CR reductions.&nbsp;</li> <li>Evaluate overall objectives while managing the details and partnering with multiple stakeholders (Investment planning, Store Development, Maintenance, Energy and Health and Sustainability teams, etc.) to evaluate best solutions that balance capital and operating expenses and meet operational requirements.&nbsp;</li> <li>Influence Brand and Company leadership to adopt design and engineering solutions and optimized strategies as they evolve.</li> </ul> Industry Intelligence&nbsp;<br /> <ul> <li>Establish and drive the company&rsquo;s strategic needs providing plan adaptations to support future trends.</li> <li>Partner with various manufacturers, engineers, consultants, industry organizations and regulatory agencies to cultivate new/creative designs &amp; systems to support RTZ.&nbsp;</li> <li>Responsible for researching competitor&rsquo;s design strategies and providing our partner engineering and design firms with insights and recommendations on applicability for use.</li> <li>Create partnerships with manufacturers to drive innovation on industry leading technology through R&amp;D efforts and piloting cutting edge technologies. &nbsp;</li> </ul> <br />Innovation / R&amp;D&nbsp;<br /> <ul> <li>This position will lead SDLFS efforts and recommendations related to&nbsp;</li> <li>New lower GWP refrigerants as &ldquo;drop-ins&rdquo;</li> <li>New lower GWP refrigeration systems</li> <li>Electrification strategies and technologies</li> <li>Options for enhanced EMS / building management systems to drive continuous improvement</li> <li>Vendor partnerships on new creative / innovative designs</li> </ul>
Requirements: Engineering Standards<br /> <ul> <li>Responsible for delivering design and engineering that is standardized where possible for economies of scale through procurement while ensuring regional geographic climate and risk factors (high humidity, wind, flooding, etc.) are considered&nbsp;</li> <li>Responsible for delivering design and engineering that is balanced to achieve optimal total lifecycle costs (balancing CapEx with future Energy and Maintenance OpEx costs)</li> <li>Responsible for ensuring independent peer review and commissioning practices are followed by all Brands</li> </ul> Engineering Oversight<br /> <ul> <li>Cultivate relationships with existing and new partners to secure industry intel from the following to ensure we are cutting edge in our work and to drive innovation:</li> <li>Equipment manufacturers</li> <li>Refrigerant manufacturers</li> <li>EMS / Building mgmt. systems&nbsp;</li> <li>Fire protection systems&nbsp;</li> <li>Oversee 3rd party consultants related to the work above</li> </ul> Set Standards<br /> <ul> <li>Develop standards with Store Development, Maintenance and Energy teams for Refrigeration, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (RHVAC) and Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP).</li> <li>When changes are warranted, set communication, training, and periodic validation in field.&nbsp;</li> <li>Key member of the RHVAC, MEP, A&amp;E, and site planning standards councils/committees, Store Design Standards Council.&nbsp;</li> <li>Additional job duties may be assigned as needed to meet the needs of the business and support our Values.</li> </ul>
